Magento Again Recognized as a Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader

In June, Gartner released the 2018 Magic Quadrant Leaders for Digital Commerce. The report, which analyzed eighteen vendors within the ecommerce industry, positioned Magento as a MQ Leader once again this year. The Gartner analysis considers a range of factors and features when determining the top digital commerce platforms including customer experience characteristics and the level of functionality provided by that platform.

Amid the top competitors in the 2018 ecosystem, Magento was situated amongst Salesforce, SAP, and Oracle as a top platform provider. Supporting a wide variety of B2B and B2C vendors, this is the second consecutive year that Magento was named a Leader. As a result of the platform’s innovative capabilities and functionality, Magento has been able to take on a leadership role in an increasingly complex ecosystem clouded with an ever-growing number of agencies, platforms, vendors, and solutions.  

Exploring the Gartner Report

Gartner is an international research and consulting agency that gathers meaningful data from top competitors in a variety of industries. The 2018 Digital Commerce publication focuses on identifying platform leaders within the ecosystem who will shape the future of ecommerce through the facilitation of innovations, subsequently pushing the boundaries of new technology. By concentrating on the visionary future of ecommerce, Gartner determines which platforms are most effectively delivering on merchant requirements while successfully executing operational strategies.

The Gartner firm takes many factors into consideration when constructing its hierarchical list, dividing the considered platforms and providers into four groups: Visionaries, Niche Players, Challengers, and Leaders. Amongst the fellow leaders are Digital River, SAP, IBM, Salesforce, and Oracle. Evaluation criteria centers on two predominant categories of business operations: ability to execute and completeness of vision. Ability to execute is determined through a consideration of overall visibility, product and services, sales execution, market responsiveness and customer experiences. Factors like market understanding, business model, innovation, and marketing, sales, product, industry, and geographic strategies all contribute to a company’s score in regards to completeness of vision.

Magento has interpreted its awarding of the Leader title as an indication of the platform’s distinctive functionality, performance, and scaling capabilities for a many types of businesses, large and small; regardless of geographic location or store type. Magento platform strengths

According to a statement on their site, Magento regards the recognition as being a result of the company’s commitment to “continued community and ecosystem growth,” the enablement of marketplace connectivity, and the ability to provide a variety of solutions across “omnichannel and organizational demands.” The 2018 Gartner Magic Quadrant Report highlights three major strengths of the Magento platform:

  • Complete solution
  “Magento has several offerings in addition to the base commerce platform, including solutions for OM, data and analytics, social selling, B2B commerce, and CPQ. Its recently released WCM functionality is available today as an extension, to be integrated to the core product in 2018.” (Gartner Magic Quadrant Report, 2018)

 
  • Marketplace connectivity
  “A marketplace module is integrated to Magento Commerce, enabling direct integration to Amazon and with built-in intelligent pricing… Integration to eBay and Walmart/Jet is planned for later in 2018.   • Growth and service provider network
  “Magento has experienced significant growth since becoming an independent company in 2015 (it was formerly owned by eBay), enabling development of a robust service provider network for solution integration and product development.” (Gartner Magic Quadrant Report, 2018)

In addition to these strengths, the Gartner Report dictated other functionalities as contributing to Magento’s earning of the Leader title. Magento Commerce has a fast time-to-market (and does so with a single-tenant SaaS), and maintains an AWS managed cloud while retaining the ability to be launched on various clouds or on-site. Magento’s Business Intelligence and Order Management systems were also recognized in the report, which positions these technologies as source of additional opportunities for improved customer experience and omnichannel capabilities.
