Accepting Gift Cards via Authorize.net in Magento

People around this time of the year are busier than ever. Since there is less time to shop this holiday season, most people are going to turn to gift cards to satisfy their holiday shopping needs. Most prepaid gift cards, such as the “Visa Gift Card” and others, can be used at any store because it’s like a debit card.

Are you seeming to have problems with transactions declining in your Authorize account? Unfortunately, if you are a Magento store owner, these prepaid cards may not seem valid because of the Address Verification System (AVS) in the settings of your Authorize account and that will seem frustrating to customers. Never fear, all you have to do is update your AVS filter and your payment system will work smoothly again! Why is this the issue, you may ask? The Address Verification System compares the billing information provided by the customer with the billing address on file at the customer’s credit card issuer. Since these gift cards do not have a billing address, the transaction will be rejected unless the AVS is updated.

In order to start accepting gift cards using Authorize.net this holiday season, just follow these simple steps:

  1. Log into your Authorize.net interface at http://account.authorize.net.

  2. Click Account from the main toolbar.

  3. Click Address Verification Service in the Security section.

  4. Uncheck ONLY the checkbox  U- The address information for the cardholder is unavailable. Do not uncheck ALL of the AVS settings.

  5. Click Submit or Save.

If you are using the Advanced Fraud Detection Suite, you can select a radio button to allow and report the triggered filter or authorize and hold for review all transactions that result in a U response code.

By changing the settings for these gift cards, this will help prevent transactions from being rejected. All other transactions with a credit card or debit card will still be processed the same way they were configured. If you are having any problems with this or would like us to change the settings for you, please call us at (214) 810-5005 or contact us at contact@creatuity.com and we can help you out.
