Two Things eCommerce Startups Must Consider
We learned so much at Magento Imagine 2014 and we want to share with you what we learned. One of the Breakout Sessions was about “5 ways to Crash an eCommerce business” and how to prevent it! This session was led by Sean Pervcival, Venture Partner at 500 Startups – here’s what we took away from it.
As a startup, it’s great to have passion for what you do and what you sell. This needs to be seen when you promote your company, but it can’t be all about passion. There needs to be a balance between experience and passion in order for a company to work. The best thing to do is to hire people that have this experience. For example, it’s good to hire someone who knows how to market your brand or knows the flow of a warehouse. Having people that specialize in certain things will make operations go by a lot smoother.
Pervcival also mentioned that it’s better to test things up front and more often, rather than testing it once and assuming it will work. Operations need to be tested often, and if it doesn’t work, change it. An example of this would be A/B testing, which is a way of determining which change gives you the most success. eCommerce is constantly changing, so you need to determine what marketing strategies work, what prices your customers are willing to pay, and how you can appeal to different niches.
